The Super Eagles of Nigeria have opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group C account with a deserved 2-1 win against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars.

Semi Ajayi gave Nigeria the lead in the 37th minute with a powerful header from an Alex Iwobi cross. Tanzania managed to pull one back early in the second half, but couldn’t add another. Ademola Lookman capitalised on the situation by adding a second goal in the 52nd minute, following a spectacular strike from outside the box.

Coach Eric Chelle fielded a strong starting XI featuring key players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and Stanley Nwabali, who made several crucial saves to maintain Nigeria’s advantage. The team dominated possession for large stretches and created multiple scoring opportunities, reflecting their determination to bounce back after missing out on the 2026 World Cup.

With this win, Nigeria gains an early advantage in Group C, boosting their hopes of claiming a fourth AFCON title. The Super Eagles will now focus on their upcoming matches as they aim to maintain momentum and continue their pursuit of continental glory.
