The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration.
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced in a statement signed by Dr Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Interior, on April 29, 2026, the holiday on behalf of the federal government and congratulated workers across the country on this year’s celebration.
Okay News reports that the government said Nigerian workers remain central to national development, economic growth, and the country’s long-term prosperity.
“The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development. He noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the statement said.
Tunji-Ojo urged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity, and dedication in the discharge of their duties.

The federal government also said it remains committed to supporting workers’ welfare and security while creating a favourable environment for economic growth.

Tunji-Ojo wished workers a happy celebration and urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the public holiday.
