Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the federal government of Nigeria’s official weather forecasting authority, has predicted a three day period of dust haze, sunshine, and isolated thunderstorms across different parts of the country beginning Monday. Okay News reports that the forecast covers Monday through Wednesday and highlights varying atmospheric conditions across Nigeria’s northern, central, and southern regions.
According to the agency’s outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, moderate dust haze is expected on Monday in parts of Kebbi State and Kano State, both located in northern Nigeria. Horizontal visibility in these areas is projected to range between two and five kilometres. Other northern states are expected to experience predominantly sunny and hazy conditions throughout the day.
For the central region of Nigeria, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency said moderate dust haze is forecast in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, which hosts the national capital Abuja, and Niger State in north central Nigeria. The remaining states within the region are expected to maintain sunny and hazy weather during the period.
In southern Nigeria, the forecast indicates mostly sunny skies with occasional cloud patches. The agency added that afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected in Bayelsa State, Lagos State, Cross River State, and Akwa Ibom State.
The agency also outlined expectations for Tuesday. It said slight dust haze is likely in parts of Kano State and Kebbi State, while other northern areas will continue under sunny and hazy skies. Central Nigeria is expected to experience similar sunny and hazy conditions, with isolated thunderstorms anticipated in parts of Plateau State during afternoon and evening hours.
Southern states are projected to record sunny skies with cloud patches, along with afternoon and evening thunderstorms affecting Ogun State, Ondo State, Edo State, Bayelsa State, Rivers State, Lagos State, Cross River State, and Akwa Ibom State.
For Wednesday, the northern and central regions are expected to remain sunny and hazy. Southern areas are predicted to experience sunny skies with occasional cloud cover and possible afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Light rains may occur across Oyo State, Ogun State, Ondo State, Edo State, Bayelsa State, Rivers State, Lagos State, Delta State, Cross River State, and Akwa Ibom State.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency warned that dust particles will remain suspended in the air, urging members of the public, especially those with asthma and other respiratory conditions, to take precautions.
The agency also advised motorists to exercise caution during rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport specific weather reports for effective flight planning. Residents were urged to monitor updates through the agency’s official website.
