Nigeria Launches Tree Campaign at Defence Academy

KADUNA, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria launched a campaign to plant one million trees at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna on Monday, June 1, 2026.

Okay News reports that Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, represented by Kaduna State Commissioner for Environment, Abubakar Buba, inaugurated the initiative at the NDA Biodiversity Conservation Centre to address climate change and deforestation.

The project is a partnership between the Africa Finance Corporation, the military institution, and Fifth Chukker. “The planting of one million trees represents a significant ecological intervention capable of sequestering substantial quantities of carbon dioxide while advancing Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement,” Buba said.

The Kaduna State Government previously provided 10,000 tree seedlings to the academy. “Environmental security is national security. A nation cannot be secure if its land is barren, its water is scarce, and its air is compromised,” the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Major-General Olatoye, said.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Finance Corporation, Ismail Zubairu, stated the corporation will plant two additional trees for every tree sponsored by its staff members. The programme includes conservation research, environmental education, and the creation of a seed bank for threatened plant species.

Major-General Olatoye stated the academy established the Biodiversity Conservation Centre two years ago to conserve indigenous flora and fauna and support environmental research.
