Asaba, Delta State, NIGERIA — The Delta State Police Command has officially condemned and taken decisive action following the extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, confirmed that the officer responsible, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, to face the Force Disciplinary Committee.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Area Command Effurun responded to intelligence regarding a suspect allegedly attempting to transport a Beretta pistol and ammunition.
Okay News reports that while the suspect was being taken into custody, ASP Usman discharged his firearm in clear violation of Force Order 237 and standard operating procedures, resulting in the death of the suspect.
Following a query and initial detention at the State Headquarters in Asaba, ASP Usman is now slated for immediate disciplinary sanctions and criminal prosecution. The Command emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for lawlessness and extra-judicial conduct, reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and public trust. CP Oyeniyi extended his sincere condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi, assuring them that the Nigeria Police Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served.
