Nigeria Reopens Independence Bridge After Traffic Gridlock

Due to severe traffic congestion, the Nigerian government has mandated the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Victoria Island, Lagos State. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, issued the order.

This directive contradicts the government’s announcement just two days prior, which stated that the bridge would be closed for necessary repairs beginning April 1, 2025. The decision to reopen the bridge comes in response to widespread complaints from Lagos commuters about the significant traffic delays caused by the ongoing repair work.

The full details of the reopening order are currently unavailable. The move follows public appeals from drivers and travelers who urged the government to alleviate the traffic congestion by reopening the bridge.
