ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, criticised the Governor of Nigeria’s Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, for requesting a United Nations investigation into the kidnapping of students and educators in the Oriire Local Government Area.
Okay News reports that the Nigerian Senate passed a resolution advising the governor to cease trivialising the abduction incident. Nigeria’s Senator Adams Oshiomhole introduced the additional prayer to fault the governor, which was seconded by Nigeria’s Senator Aniekan Bassey.
The legislative action follows a statewide broadcast on Monday, July 13, 2026, where Governor Makinde addressed the release of the victims after 56 days in captivity. Governor Makinde said the incident “raises questions that require independent scrutiny beyond Nigeria’s domestic institutions.” The victims had been formally handed over to the state government by the Nigerian Armed Forces shortly before the broadcast.
The original motion was sponsored by Nigeria’s Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and focused on commending Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alongside multiple security agencies for the successful rescue operation. Lawmakers praised the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services, and the National Intelligence Agency.
The legislative body urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the prompt payment of statutory death benefits, insurance claims, and pensions to the families of personnel who died during the rescue. The deceased officers were identified as Lieutenant F. A. Isaac and Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion within the Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.
The chamber observed one minute of silence for the deceased personnel. Lawmakers also formally commended Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain for his actions during the operation and urged authorities to ensure he receives medical treatment for his injuries and all welfare entitlements.
