The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a notable increase in active voice and internet subscriptions across the country. This revelation comes amidst adjustments to telecommunications statistical indicators, reflecting updated population figures and aligning with international standards.
Dr. Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, revealed these developments in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja. Muoka highlighted the adjustments made based on the Nigerian Population Commission’s projection, indicating Nigeria’s population at 216,783,381 as of 2022, a shift from the previous estimate of 190 million in 2017.
“With this adjustment in line with international standards,” stated Muoka, “the nation’s teledensity decreased from 115.63 per cent to 102.30 per cent in September. Similarly, broadband penetration saw a decline from 45.47 per cent to 40.85 per cent during the same period.”
Muoka further noted, “Active voice subscriptions experienced marginal growth from 220,361,186 to 221,769,883 as of September 2023. Additionally, internet subscriptions witnessed a slight increase from 159,034,717 in August 2023 to 160,171,757 in September 2023.”
The industry continued its growth trajectory in subsequent months, with a 0.19 per cent increase in active voice subscriptions and a teledensity of 102.49 per cent recorded in October 2023. Internet subscriptions also saw a 0.60 per cent rise compared to September.
In November 2023, the sector sustained its growth momentum with a 0.46 per cent increase in active voice subscriptions, accompanied by a teledensity of 102.97 per cent. Internet subscriptions grew by 0.57 per cent compared to October 2023.
Muoka emphasized that teledensity serves as a vital metric for measuring telephone penetration per 100 individuals in the population, aligning with international standards and regulatory mandates outlined in the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of NCC, affirmed the significance of these adjustments, underscoring their role in maintaining data integrity and accurately assessing progress towards enhanced broadband penetration, improved service quality, and expanded population coverage.
