Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria — The Nigerian Army has officially moved a group of soldiers into a newly completed accommodation block at Ribadu Cantonment, a major military base in Kaduna State in northwestern Nigeria, as part of efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of military personnel.

The handover ceremony took place on Friday, March 6, 2026, and was organised by the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, one of the army’s key operational formations responsible for security operations across parts of northern Nigeria.

Okay News reports that the housing project was funded by the Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, the professional head of the country’s land forces. The project aligns with his leadership philosophy known as the “Soldier First Culture,” a policy that emphasises prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of soldiers as a foundation for improving operational effectiveness and combat readiness.

According to reports, the initiative reflects the army leadership’s belief that better living conditions for troops can help strengthen morale and enhance their ability to carry out demanding security operations across the country.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officers and personnel who were among the beneficiaries of the new facility. The General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector 1 of Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Abubakar Wase, was represented at the event by Lieutenant Colonel R. O. Ejoor, the Commanding Officer of the Administration Battalion at the 1 Division Garrison.

Operation Fansan Yamma is a Nigerian military operation tasked with combating armed banditry and other security threats in parts of northern Nigeria, including Kaduna State and neighbouring regions.

Addressing the soldiers who received the new housing units, Wase urged them to protect and properly maintain the facility to ensure it remains in good condition for long term use. He also warned against actions that could damage the infrastructure.

He cautioned personnel against engaging in illegal electricity connections or any other activities that could harm the modern accommodation facility, stressing that anyone found violating these rules would face disciplinary measures.

Wase also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for providing funding for the project, noting that improved military infrastructure plays an important role in strengthening the performance and mental preparedness of troops deployed in different operational theatres across Nigeria.

Nigeria has faced persistent security challenges in several regions, including armed banditry, kidnapping, and insurgent attacks. Military authorities often emphasise that improving soldiers’ welfare, housing, and equipment is essential for sustaining the effectiveness of troops engaged in these operations.

The event concluded with the formal presentation of keys to the soldiers who will occupy the newly built housing block, marking their official relocation into the facility.
