LAGOS, Nigeria — Spotify says Nigerian musicians generated more than ₦60 billion ($) in revenue from the streaming service in 2025, highlighting the rapidly expanding economic and global influence of Nigeria’s music industry.

The figures were released in Spotify’s Loud & Clear report, an annual transparency initiative that analyses streaming data to help artists, fans, and the broader music industry understand how music generates revenue and how audiences engage with artists worldwide.

Okay News reports that the latest report indicates significant growth for Nigerian artists, with revenue from Spotify alone rising by more than 140 percent over the past two years.

The data also shows strong audience engagement with Nigerian music across the platform. In 2025, Nigerian artists recorded 30.3 billion streams and 1.6 billion hours of listening globally on Spotify.

The report further revealed that their music reached new audiences, with more than 1.3 billion first-time discoveries, representing a 26 percent increase compared to 2024.

Within Nigeria itself, local music continues to dominate listening habits. According to the report, over 80 percent of songs featured on Spotify Nigeria’s Daily Top 50 chart in 2025 were by Nigerian artists, reflecting the strong domestic appeal of homegrown talent. Streams of Nigerian artists within the country also grew by 170 percent year-on-year.

Commenting on the findings, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy said the numbers highlight Nigeria’s growing cultural and commercial impact on the global music scene.

“Nigeria’s music story continues to be one of creativity, innovation and global cultural influence. What we’re seeing is a market where talent is not only reaching new audiences around the world, but also building deeper connections at home. For us, Loud & Clear is an opportunity to spotlight the evolving pathways artists are taking to build sustainable careers, and to show the many ways Nigerian creators are shaping the future of music,” she said.

The report also pointed to significant growth among different groups of artists. Streams of Nigerian female artists within the country rose by 55 percent, while streams of independent Nigerian artists increased by 75 percent year-on-year.

Spotify noted that around 58 percent of all royalties generated by Nigerian artists in 2025 came from independent artists or labels, underscoring the important role of independent creators in the country’s music economy.

The platform’s editorial ecosystem also played a role in expanding artist visibility. Nearly 2,000 Nigerian musicians were added to Spotify’s editorial playlists in 2025, helping them reach broader audiences.

Globally, Nigerian music continued to resonate with listeners, appearing in almost 320 million user-generated playlists worldwide, while more than 12 million playlists featuring Nigerian artists were created within Nigeria. Overall, the platform recorded over 60 million playlists featuring Nigerian artists during the year.

The report also highlighted changing listening trends in Nigeria. Over the last five years, genres such as pop urbaine, alternative pop, anime, emo, and drill have experienced the fastest growth on the platform, signalling a diversification of musical tastes among Nigerian listeners.

Spotify said the Loud & Clear initiative aims to improve transparency in the streaming economy while offering insight into how artists are building careers and expanding audiences through digital platforms.

The full report and detailed streaming data are available through Spotify’s Loud & Clear portal.
