ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has started paying the delayed 2025 allowances to Nigerian students studying abroad under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme.
Okay News reports that the Federal Ministry of Education announced the update on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has successfully sent the funds to various Nigerian embassies and foreign missions, which will now distribute the money directly to the students.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, explained that the released funds cover 50 percent of what the government owes the students for 2025. He assured that the ministry is already working hard to clear the remaining balance soon. Since the money has landed in the embassy accounts, students have been told to monitor their bank accounts as the payments should start reflecting shortly.
Dr. Alausa noted that this move shows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to supporting Nigerian scholars overseas under his Renewed Hope Agenda. The Ministry of Education recently clarified that while the government has stopped taking on new students under the BEA program, it is fully committed to funding and supporting all existing students abroad until they finish their degrees.
