Lagos, Nigeria – Emmanuel Nwude, the infamous Nigerian businessman known for defrauding a Brazilian bank of $242 million to build a fictitious airport, has been sentenced to one year in prison.
A Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, handed down the sentence to the former Union Bank director alongside his two lawyers, Emmanuel Ilechukwu and Rowland Kanu.
Okay News reports that Justice Mojisola Dada delivered the verdict after the trio was found guilty following their arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The defendants faced a 15-count charge that included conspiracy, forgery, uttering false documents, fabricating evidence, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The anti-graft agency successfully proved that Nwude and his legal team conspired to forge documents in a desperate bid to reclaim seized assets.
The fabricated documents included a Power of Attorney in favor of Mankris Ventures Limited, which was designed to illegally grant the company control over a property that the Lagos State High Court had previously ordered Nwude to forfeit to the victims of his massive fraud scheme.
