Abuja, Nigeria – The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has issued a public alert regarding a job recruitment scam where fraudsters impersonate its officials.

The commission is warning Nigerians to be cautious of individuals attempting to gather personal information under the false promise of employment.

The scammers have been contacting people through WhatsApp, email, and phone calls, creating a false sense of urgency to deceive them into providing sensitive data. According to Okay News, a common tactic includes giving victims a 48-hour deadline to send documents to a fake secretary via WhatsApp. PenCom also confirmed that some criminals impersonate its Director-General to make their claims seem more credible.

PenCom advises the public to immediately delete any suspicious messages and to avoid sharing them. The warning aligns with broader efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat financial fraud, as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently shut down over 400 fraudulent investment schemes.

While addressing this threat, PenCom reported that the nation’s total pension assets grew to 29.43 trillion Naira (approximately $21.8 billion USD) as of February 2026. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding these funds and protecting the public from such fraudulent activities.
