The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced plans to offer a special train service across its routes nationwide for the Yuletide season, in line with a directive from the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

The announcement, made on Wednesday by Yakub Mahmood, Deputy Director of Public Relations at NRC, promises to ease transportation for Nigerians traveling during the festive period. Mahmood noted that details of the special service, including dates and operational modalities, would be released soon.

The initiative plans to provide discounted travel options for Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

This is part of efforts to ensure affordable and convenient travel options for citizens visiting family and friends during the festive season.

While the exact discount rates for this year’s train service are yet to be disclosed, previous initiatives by the government included a 50% discount for inter-state road travel and free train rides during the Yuletide period.

In 2023, the government’s subsidized travel program benefitted over 112,000 passengers, according to the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria.

A statement from NRC reads: “The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, hereby informs the general public that the NRC shall operate end-of-the-year special train services in commemoration of Christmas and New Year celebrations.”

It added that the service is “part of the government’s gesture towards an enjoyable end-of-the-year celebration.”

The Federal Ministry of Transportation, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Olujimi Oyetomi, has also confirmed the initiative. While specific details on fare reductions have not been disclosed, the move is expected to provide significant relief for Nigerians facing economic pressures.

The NRC extended warm festive wishes to its customers, saying, “We wish all our esteemed customers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance.”
