ZARIA, Nigeria — Students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have secured three major awards at the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, emerging among the top-performing teams from around the world in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and innovation.

Okay News reports that the students claimed the grand prize in the AI and Innovation category with their project known as ParaVision, finished first in the Cloud track and placed second in the Computing category. The team also received the Women in Tech Award alongside Nigeria’s Network Team during the competition’s closing ceremony on June 5.

The global contest, held from June 2 to June 5 in Shenzhen, brought together 177 teams from more than 40 countries to compete across several technology-focused categories, including networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and software innovation. Huawei said more than 220,000 students initially participated worldwide before progressing through national, regional and global stages.

ABU officials said the students earned their place at the finals after successfully advancing through Nigeria’s national competition in December 2025 and the Southern Africa regional finals in March 2026.

The university noted that the award-winning ParaVision project is powered by artificial intelligence and built on Huawei’s Orange Pi AIPro platform using the Ascend 310B4 chip. According to the institution, the technology is designed to conduct laboratory tests either independently or simultaneously and generate printed reports within minutes. The solution also supports multiple languages, including French, Arabic, Chinese and Swahili.

University authorities explained that participants in the Network, Cloud and Computing categories faced an intensive eight-hour laboratory challenge that required them to solve real-world technology problems, while the AI and Innovation category focused on designing practical solutions using Huawei technologies.

The winning students include Kumba-Banna Tekanyi, Yakubu Musa Yakubu, Adekunle Abdulroqeeb Oladimeji, Wakili Sefiu Bolaji, Yunus Muhammad, Ruqayyah Hassan Labo, Khadija Khalid and Grace Temitayo Olorunfemi. They were mentored by Dr. Bashir Halliru Sani and Dr. Zaharaddeen Haruna. ABU described the achievement as further evidence of its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates capable of driving innovation and addressing contemporary technological challenges.
