Abuja, NIGERIA — A wave of nostalgia and national reflection swept across the country on Tuesday, as Nigerians from all walks of life marked the 16th anniversary of the passing of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The late “Servant Leader,” who died in office on May 5, 2010, was honored through emotional tributes led by his successor, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and other political figures.

In a deeply personal tribute, Goodluck Jonathan described Yar’Adua as a “worthy partner in service” and a brother who prioritized national stability over political gain. He highlighted the late President’s rare humility and his unwavering commitment to the Rule of Law and the sanctity of the ballot. Jonathan noted that Yar’Adua’s record in peace-building—particularly the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme—remains a foundational pillar of Nigeria’s current internal security.

Okay News reports that this message of “leadership as a sacred trust” resonated deeply as the nation prepares for the 2027 General Elections.

Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and the National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, also joined in the commemorations. Saraki remarked on the “love and nostalgia” with which Nigerians still speak of the late President, emphasizing his integrity and commitment to the well-being of everyday citizens. Turaki, representing the party leadership, described the late leader as “evergreen in our hearts,” a sentiment echoed by thousands on social media who contrasted his “Servant Leader” philosophy with the current political landscape.
