State House, Abuja, NIGERIA — The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, hosted the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt. Rev. Justin Welby, on Wednesday, to discuss international perspectives on Nigeria’s security and the importance of interfaith harmony.
During the meeting, the First Lady urged the global community to adopt a more accurate framing of Nigeria’s internal challenges, emphasizing that solutions must be rooted in local peculiarities.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu thanked Rev. Welby for his commitment to Interfaith Dialogue and suggested that Nigerian security agencies be included in such conversations to provide a comprehensive view of peace-building efforts.
Okay News reports that she also called on religious institutions globally to “preach right so that people can live right,” while commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their continued gallantry in the face of security threats.
Rt. Rev. Justin Welby, accompanied by the British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery, briefed the First Lady on an upcoming high-level meeting in London. The dialogue, convened by the Global Forum for Peace, Abu Dhabi, will feature 12 Christian and 12 Muslim leaders. “We want to contribute to what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing to promote peace,” Welby stated, noting that the goal is to foster mutual listening and workable solutions to interfaith conflicts.
Girls in Tech and Digital Connectivity
In a separate engagement on Wednesday, the First Lady received the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. The Minister briefed her on the progress of the “Girls in Tech” program, an initiative aimed at bridging the gender gap in Nigeria’s burgeoning technology sector.
Following the meeting, Dr. Tijani announced that the First Lady will host a special dinner in Abuja to showcase innovative solutions developed by participants of the program. Significantly, Senator Oluremi Tinubu also accepted to be the “face of the campaign” to deepen internet penetration and connectivity in Nigeria’s rural and riverine areas, aligning her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) with the ministry’s digital inclusion goals.
