ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s average daily natural gas production increased to 7.93 billion standard cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in May 2026, according to data released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The figure represents a 0.63% increase from the 7.88bcf/d recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
The latest data showed that Non-Associated Gas production slightly exceeded Associated Gas production during the month. Associated Gas output stood at 3.96bcf/d, while Non-Associated Gas contributed 3.98bcf/d, reflecting the growing role of dedicated gas development projects in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Okay News reports that total gas production declined marginally by 0.12% from the 7.94bcf/d recorded in April 2026. However, year-to-date average production improved to 7.87bcf/d, compared with 7.82bcf/d recorded during the first quarter of the year.
The commission noted that gas production maintained a generally upward trend in recent months, rising from 7.80bcf/d in January to 7.81bcf/d in February, 7.85bcf/d in March, and 7.94bcf/d in April before settling at 7.93bcf/d in May.
According to the NUPRC, 3.07bcf/d of gas was exported during the month, accounting for about 40% of total production. Domestic gas sales reached 2.18bcf/d, while 2.11bcf/d was consumed for field operations and internal use. Gas flaring accounted for 0.57bcf/d, representing 6.9% of total output.
The regulator said Nigeria utilised about 92% of its natural gas production between January and April 2026 as the government continues efforts to expand domestic gas supply, support industrialisation, increase electricity generation and reduce routine gas flaring. The country aims to end routine gas flaring by 2030 while unlocking more value from its estimated 200 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves.
