Lagos, Nigeria — The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who leads the Nigeria Police Force, has announced a significant restructuring of leadership across several regional commands. In a statement released on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the police chief named Olatunji Fatai as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, which serves as Nigeria’s primary economic hub located in the southwestern region of the country.
Olatunji Fatai takes over the prominent role from Assistant Inspector General Moshood Jimoh. The outgoing officer, Moshood Jimoh, has been moved to lead Zone 2, a supervisory police formation headquartered in Lagos that oversees operations in both Lagos State and neighboring Ogun State, following his recent elevation in rank. Okay News reports that these changes are part of a broader strategy by the federal government of Nigeria to optimize the effectiveness of the country’s internal security architecture.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anthony Placid, serving as the Force Public Relations Officer, explained that the new assignments are intended to strengthen operational capacity and improve the delivery of security services to citizens. Beyond the leadership change in Lagos, the Inspector General also designated Commissioner of Police (CP) Muhammed Sanusi Ahmed to lead the command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which includes the capital city of Abuja.
Other major appointments include the deployment of Haruna Alaba Yahaya to Jigawa State in the north, Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola to Oyo State, and Olubode Ojajuni to Ogun State. The reshuffle extended across the West African nation, with new commissioners sent to head police operations in Ekiti, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states.
In addition to state-level leadership, several high-ranking officers were assigned to specialized units. These include the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the Special Protection Unit (SPU), and various branches of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). Inspector General Disu instructed the newly appointed officers to utilize their professional experience to maintain high standards of discipline. The police leadership expects these changes to result in a more proactive approach to tackling crime and ensuring public safety throughout Nigeria.
