Abuja, Nigeria – In a move aimed at improving the welfare of those serving in the country’s security forces, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the go-ahead for higher salaries and allowances for members of the armed forces. This decision comes amid ongoing efforts to address security challenges in Nigeria, a West African nation that has been grappling with issues such as insurgency in the northeast and banditry in the northwest.

The announcement was highlighted during a special dinner on Saturday, March 7, 2026, where government officials, military leaders, and others gathered to break their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The event took place in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, located in the central region of the country.

At the gathering, the Chief of Army Staff expressed gratitude to the president for the approvals. “I want to most sincerely thank our indefatigable President for various approvals for upward review of salaries members as well as upward review allowances,” he said. He added that these changes would also cover better equipment and housing for service members. “These laudable approvals will go a long way in enhancing our operational efficiency,” the Chief of Army Staff noted, assuring that the measures are welcomed by all in the armed forces.

This pay adjustment is significant because Nigeria’s military has been actively involved in combating various threats to national security for over a decade. For instance, the armed forces have been key in operations against groups like Boko Haram, an Islamist insurgent organization operating mainly in the northeastern states such as Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. Additionally, soldiers have been deployed to tackle armed bandits who carry out kidnappings and attacks in rural areas of the northwest, including states like Zamfara and Kaduna. Better compensation could help boost morale and retention in the ranks, which is crucial for maintaining effective responses to these persistent issues.

President Tinubu, who took office in May 2023 after winning the presidential election, responded to the thanks by acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel. He pointed out that many service members spend time away from their families and face dangers in the line of duty. “This nation will always be grateful to you and your sufferings will not be in vain,” he said. The president also touched on broader national matters, noting that the economy has faced tough times but is now stabilizing. He emphasized unity and collective effort in moving the country forward.

The decision affects thousands of personnel in the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, who form the core of the nation’s defense apparatus. While specific details on the percentage increase or exact amounts were not disclosed in the speeches, the move is expected to provide financial relief amid rising living costs in Nigeria. The country’s economy has been under pressure from factors like inflation and currency fluctuations, making such welfare improvements timely for public sector workers.

What happens next likely involves the federal government of Nigeria implementing the changes through the Ministry of Defence, which oversees military affairs. This could include budgetary allocations in the coming fiscal periods to fund the higher pay scales. Okay News reports that similar adjustments have been made in the past to support security forces, and this latest approval builds on those efforts.

Those affected include not only active-duty soldiers but potentially their families, as better pay and housing can improve overall living conditions. As Nigeria continues to prioritize security in its national agenda, such measures are seen as essential to ensuring the armed forces remain motivated and capable.
