The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, has dismissed 115 officers as part of a sweeping internal reform aimed at strengthening discipline and operational integrity within the organization.
In a public notice released on Tuesday, the agency, often referred to as Nigeria’s secret police, cautioned citizens and international partners to avoid any form of engagement with the dismissed personnel, warning that some have continued to impersonate active officers to defraud members of the public.
The statement read: “As part of the ongoing reforms in the Department of State Services (DSS), the public is hereby informed that a total of 115 personnel have been dismissed over a period.
“In addition to earlier disclaimers on the duo of Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, the Service finds it necessary to warn citizens of the fraudulent activities of some of these persons still posing as DSS personnel.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to desist from any official dealing with these individuals who have been dismissed by the Service.”
The DSS plays a key role in counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and internal security, said the dismissals are part of its ongoing efforts to professionalize the service and restore public confidence in its operations.
Although the agency did not specify the offences committed by the affected personnel, it reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and corruption, noting that continued reforms would ensure that its officers meet international standards of intelligence and law enforcement ethics.
The DSS also reiterated warnings to citizens against impostors claiming to represent the agency, stating that such individuals often exploit the agency’s name for financial or political gain.
