The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at improving the National Identification Number-SIM linkage processes in Nigeria.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, Ayodele Babalola, the Technical Adviser, Media, and Communications to the DG/CEO of NIMC, and Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, highlighted the significance of aligning SIM registrations with individuals’ unique National Identification Numbers (NINs) to bolster security and enhance service delivery.

The NIN-SIM linkage exercise has gained considerable attention in recent times, reflecting its crucial role in ensuring accurate identification and verification of telecom subscribers.

Both commissions underscored their commitment to enhancing processes and efficiency while prioritizing the interests of Nigerians and promoting national development.

“Through this collaborative effort, we aim to address the challenges associated with the NIN-SIM linkage exercise and ensure its seamless implementation,” the statement read.

Key areas of focus under this partnership include streamlining the NIN-SIM linkage process, capacity building, public awareness, data verification, policy harmonization, and regulatory framework enhancement.

The collaboration aims to facilitate swift verification and authentication of NINs during SIM registration and activation processes, ensuring accuracy and integrity of subscriber data.

Educational campaigns, stakeholder training sessions, and dissemination of accurate information will be conducted to increase public awareness and compliance with the linkage directives.

NIMC will provide support to NCC by assisting in verifying NINs associated with SIM registrations, leveraging its robust database and authentication infrastructure.

Harmonization of policies and regulatory frameworks will be prioritized to ensure seamless integration of NIN-SIM linkage processes within the telecommunications ecosystem, while safeguarding data protection and privacy.
