NiMet Predicts Three Days of Thunderstorms and Rain Across Nigeria Starting Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a series of thunderstorms and rainfall events spanning Monday through Wednesday, June 2 to 4, 2025, affecting multiple regions nationwide.

In its latest weather outlook issued Sunday in Abuja, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms on Monday accompanied by rains in northern states including Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano. The agency further predicts afternoon thunderstorms with rain over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.

The North-central region is expected to experience morning thunderstorms with rain over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa States. Thunderstorms with rains are forecasted in the afternoon and evening over Plateau, FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States.

In the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere with morning rain is expected over Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, rain showers are anticipated in Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

For Tuesday, morning thunderstorms with rains will likely affect Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba in the north, with afternoon rains expected in Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina. The North-central region will see morning thunderstorms over FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa, followed by afternoon rains in FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, and Plateau.

Southern states such as Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom will experience morning thunderstorms, with rains expected later in Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

On Wednesday, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms with rain over Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba in the north, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms over Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa. The North-central region will have morning thunderstorms in FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue, followed by afternoon rains in Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger.

Southern states will see morning rains in Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, with widespread rain expected in the afternoon and evening.

NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees to prevent accidents from falling branches. The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for operational planning and encouraged residents to stay updated via NiMet’s website.

“Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” NiMet emphasized. “Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet. Visit our website www.nimet.gov.ng,” the agency concluded.
