The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a critical weather advisory, warning that 19 states spanning the North-Central zone, South-East, and coastal regions face imminent heat stress risks in the coming days.

According to the Tuesday bulletin from NiMet, regions expected to experience severe thermal discomfort include Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Additional vulnerable states identified in the forecast are Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.

The meteorological agency forecasts escalating temperatures accompanied by high humidity levels persisting over the next three to four days. These conditions are expected to create significant thermal discomfort across multiple regions of the country.

Health experts warn that this weather pattern may trigger several adverse effects including fatigue, irritability, diminished concentration, impaired motor skills, and reduced productivity levels among residents of affected areas.

To mitigate these risks, NiMet has provided several precautionary recommendations for residents in the affected states. These include utilizing cooling systems such as fans and air conditioners, seeking shelter in shaded areas, and wearing lightweight, breathable clothing.

The agency further advises consistent hydration, avoiding outdoor activities during peak sun intensity hours (12 pm to 3 pm), and employing sun protection measures including hats, sunglasses, and appropriate sunscreen application.
