Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, discussed joint research and the introduction of artificial intelligence across university courses in August 2026.
Nigeria Communications Week and Business Hilights reported the talks on August 7 after Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi led a delegation to NITDA’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Okay News reports that the visit concerned proposed cooperation on digital infrastructure, skills and research, according to the contemporaneous accounts.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi called for students in different disciplines to learn how AI could be applied in their fields. He also urged universities to undertake research that addressed practical problems.
Nigeria Communications Week reported that Inuwa discussed NITDA’s work with education authorities on digital literacy and preparing graduates for industry requirements.
Fawehinmi sought technical support for teaching facilities and welcomed the agency’s earlier contribution to the university’s Digital Geoscience Centre.
Business Hilights reported that the university proposed cooperation on data, staff exchanges and joint research hubs. Fawehinmi said it was willing to contribute academic expertise to NITDA’s programmes.
The accounts describe areas for cooperation explored during the visit. They do not set out a signed agreement, committed budget or timetable for introducing an AI course.
