Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to widen financial supervision to cover the technology networks supporting banking, in an account published on August 21, 2026.

NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi addressed the central bank’s departmental directors at their 15th retreat in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Okay News reports that Inuwa called for real-time visibility of risks across banking, telecommunications, cloud services and other digital platforms, according to the agency.

He said periodic returns from individual institutions were no longer sufficient to explain risks in financial services that depended on interconnected providers.

Inuwa also urged regulators to examine risks involving external technology suppliers and strengthen the skills needed to supervise artificial intelligence and cloud systems.

His presentation focused on digital transformation, supervision, innovation and operational resilience. He linked the changes in banking to the need for a different regulatory approach.

NITDA’s account said Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso addressed the retreat virtually. Cardoso asked directors to support their teams and improve cooperation across departments as the institution carried out reforms.
