The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has praised leading tech giants Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, following the submission of their 2024 compliance reports.
The Code of Practice, jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), sets out mandatory guidelines for safeguarding users, addressing harmful content, and ensuring digital accountability.
Massive Content Takedowns and Account Closures
According to NITDA, the platforms’ reports offer a detailed look into their online harm mitigation efforts. Highlights from the data include:
- 754,629 registered complaints from users
- 58,909,112 content takedowns across multiple categories
- 420,439 content appeals upheld, leading to reuploads
- 13,597,057 account closures and deactivations for violating platform policies
NITDA said these numbers demonstrate the growing commitment of global tech companies to align with Nigeria’s regulatory standards and provide safer online spaces for users.
Building a Safer Digital Ecosystem
Mrs. Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications & Media Relations, described the development as “a significant step towards a more secure and trustworthy digital ecosystem.”
She emphasized that the Code of Practice also requires large service platforms to register in Nigeria, fulfill tax obligations, and comply with local laws.
While commending the platforms, NITDA called for sustained collaboration among government, industry, and civil society to strengthen user protection, improve digital literacy, and enhance public trust in the country’s digital space.
