Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) asked regulators and technology providers to strengthen consumer safeguards at a forum described in its May 25, 2026, report.
The discussions addressed artificial intelligence, personal-data collection and the challenges of regulating services that operate across national borders.
Okay News reports that Emmanuel Edet, NITDA’s acting director of regulation and compliance, represented the agency’s director-general, Kashifu Inuwa, at the Consumer Protection Forum.
Inuwa said many users did not understand the extent to which digital platforms collected and processed their information. He also raised questions about how automated systems influence the information people encounter online.
Ngozi Akinbodewa, head of operations at SERVICOM, Nigeria’s public-service delivery monitoring office, said consumer experiences should inform decisions about services and standards.
She asked institutions to listen to users and apply their feedback when reviewing policies.
The agency’s account described a consultation and calls for stronger safeguards. It did not announce a new binding consumer-protection regulation or enforcement action.
