Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) unveiled regulatory instruments for its National Sovereign Cloud Initiative in August 2026, setting out plans for domestic cloud infrastructure and oversight of digital services.
The agency confirmed the signing of the initiative’s documents in a public announcement. The launch in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, was reported by MegaNews on August 4.
Okay News reports that the package combined cloud-computing guidance, technical standards and a digital-infrastructure assurance framework with an investment strategy, according to the agency’s announcement and reporting of the launch.
Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi said the instruments were intended to give infrastructure providers and investors clearer expectations. He said Nigeria needed capacity that could serve domestic users and other West and Central African markets.
The event included representatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, government technology provider Galaxy Backbone and cloud-industry participants, according to the August 4 account.
The central bank’s contribution described financial-sector regulation and digital-infrastructure oversight as complementary responsibilities.
NITDA also outlined plans for a Sovereign Cloud Governance Committee, with representatives from government, regulators and industry. Its launch-stage account said the agency would act as the committee’s secretariat.
