ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said no final decision has been taken regarding his political future or that of his associates amid ongoing challenges within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Kwankwaso made the clarification in a statement addressing reports suggesting a possible political realignment within the party.
Okay News reports that the former presidential candidate said recent developments, including court rulings, have placed the ADC in a difficult position.
“The recent Supreme Court judgment, while affirming the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC), also remitted the matter back to the High Court. This has left the party in a precarious position,” he said.
He added that a separate ruling by the Federal High Court has delegitimised the party’s recent convention, while noting that the Attorney General of the Federation has filed an application seeking the deregistration of the party.
Kwankwaso said his political group is currently engaging in consultations with stakeholders across different parties.
“Consequently, like other major stakeholders, we have commenced wide-ranging consultations — including with leaders from the NDC, PRP and others to explore the best options for protecting our democratic interests. We shall announce our decision in the soonest possible time,” he said.
He recalled that his political movement left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) due to legal challenges, adding that the ADC is now facing similar pressures.
Kwankwaso also dismissed speculation about his presidential ambition, stating that the party has not taken any decision on zoning or candidates.
“I have therefore neither declared any intention to run for president nor endorsed any aspirant. All speculations to the contrary are premature and unfounded,” he said.
He cited his previous participation in presidential primaries, noting that he supported party winners in 2014 and 2019, placing party unity above personal ambition.
Kwankwaso explained that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to personal commitments, which he said were communicated to the party leadership.
He added that any decision on his political direction will be announced through official channels.
