The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed support for the establishment of state police. He believes it will enable state governors to effectively tackle security challenges in their domains.

Currently, security agencies have their command bases situated in the center, making it difficult for governors to exercise their powers as chief security officers. Governor Yahaya noted that with state police, governors will be able to monitor and implement security decisions swiftly, leading to better results.

Although he acknowledged that it’s a constitutional matter requiring legislative processes, he commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for supporting the policy. He expressed confidence that the National Assembly will expedite action, and state governors are ready to give their full support.

The establishment of state police requires a two-third majority endorsement from states and passage through the National Assembly. Governor Yahaya believes that having state police will bring security closer to the people, and he is confident that the President and Nigerians across the country share this vision.
