Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), formerly Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has assured Nigerians that the new tax laws effective last week are designed to foster sustainable development and rapid economic growth.
Okay News reports that Adedeji, speaking on national television, emphasised the reforms’ focus on economic stability and building credible institutions for long-term national progress.
He dismissed suggestions that the framework could be weaponised against political opposition or individuals based on affiliation.
Adedeji described such concerns as misdirected, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to transparency, due process, and national interest.
Responding to fears of selective enforcement, he praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s courage in pursuing reforms despite upcoming elections.
Adedeji noted it would have been politically easier to delay changes, but the President prioritised statesmanship and fiscal strengthening.
The reforms aim to correct structural weaknesses, enhance fairness, simplify compliance, and encourage voluntary participation over coercion.
Adedeji acknowledged historical scepticism toward public institutions but stressed efforts to reduce administrative discretion through rule-based, automated systems.
The NRS is institutionalising accountability and governance safeguards to ensure tax processes remain insulated from political influence.
He highlighted building trust as central, where citizens see clear links between taxes and improved public services.
The phased implementation will expand growth opportunities, protect vulnerable groups, and boost investment confidence.
Adedeji reiterated that the agenda supports broader economic governance without partisan bias.
