ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has disowned a circulating infographic that falsely announces a new vehicle tax and directs vehicle owners to make payments through a fake website, warning the public to disregard the claim.

Okay News reports that Mr Dare Adekambi, Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman and the agency’s spokesperson, issued a statement on Sunday, April 26, 2026, clarifying that no such tax has been introduced by the Federal Government.

“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency. Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” Adekambi said.

The misleading infographic claims that a new vehicle tax will take effect from July 1 and instructs owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay through banks and unofficial agencies. It also provides a bogus web address instead of the official NRS website.

The alert comes ahead of the April 30 scheduled launch of Rev360, a new revenue administration platform that will replace systems inherited from the former Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) . The platform is part of broader tax modernisation efforts.

The NRS has set a revenue target of N40.7 trillion for 2026, a 44 percent increase from the N28.29 trillion collected in 2025. Collections have climbed steadily from N6.4 trillion in 2021, reflecting stricter compliance and enforcement.

The agency urged Nigerians to follow its official website and verified social media channels for accurate updates and warned against relying on anonymous graphics and unverified online content.
