The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology by the Imo State Government.

With the new approval, Imo State now has eight federal and state-owned universities, bringing the total number of state universities in Nigeria to 70.

Governor Hope Uzodimma received the letter of recognition from the NUC Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Ribadu, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Ribadu commended the Imo State Government for its vision in expanding access to higher education. He urged the new university to maintain global academic standards, prioritizing research, innovation, and strong industry engagement.

“The university should be built on standards — with quality research, the expansion of knowledge, and active engagement with industry and society,” Ribadu stated.

He further advised the management to remain student-focused by designing academic programmes that produce graduates equipped with practical and innovative skills relevant to their communities.

According to the NUC, the approval takes immediate effect, enabling the institution to commence academic operations once its structures and administration are ready.

Governor Uzodimma described the development as a milestone in his administration’s commitment to quality education and youth empowerment. He said the university would focus on innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship to create jobs and prepare young Nigerians for the digital economy.

He added that the institution would collaborate with international partners, including the University of California, Berkeley, for mentorship and research exchange.
