BSU

The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) has concluded arrangements and will soon withdraw accreditation of the law faculty of the Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Msugh Kembe has said.

Kembe, who stated this weekend while fielding questions from newsmen in Makurdi said the shut down of the faculty became necessary by the Council of Legal Education and NUC because the university has not met the professional requirement.

According to him, the requirement for a fully accreditated law faculty of any universitas in the country were a well furnished mute court, law building, law clinic and library as well as proper mix of professional staff which the BSU has not met.

Kembe stated that the law faculty would need N119m to construct the buildings in order to meet the council’s requirements which he, said the university cannot afford now due to the nationwide financial crunch.

He further said the sum of N100m was released during the Governor Suswam administration to a contractor (name withheld) for the execution of projects in the faculty, but that the contractor failed to deliver the job.

The VC added that the contractor had claimed it was owed a balance of N59m which it said the university should offset before the projects would be completed.

He however said he has made remarkable achievements since he assumed office few months ago.

These he said included constitution of management committee on ICT, computerization of departments, directorates and centres, as well as successful accreditation of 7 programmes in the university.
