Ile-Ife, Osun State, NIGERIA — The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a university in Ile-Ife, South-southwestern Nigeria, have officially denied the use of its Oduduwa Hall for a proposed lecture by former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a press statement, the institution cited logistical failures and security protocols as the primary reasons for the decision, rather than political bias.
According to the University, a student group had invited the former Anambra State Governor to deliver a lecture on campus but failed to inform the administration of the “status and calibre” of the guest until Friday, less than 24 hours before the scheduled event.
Okay News reports that the institution requires adequate prior notification for high-profile personalities to coordinate with the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure public safety.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, emphasized that the decision was taken “purely in the interest of safety and orderliness.” The University maintained that it holds Peter Obi in high esteem and remains committed to supporting intellectual engagements, provided that due process is followed. Officials noted that the short notice made it impossible to finalize the critical security arrangements necessary for an event of such magnitude.
The development has sparked debate among the student body, with many expressing disappointment over the missed opportunity to engage with the political leader. However, the University management has enjoined all students and organizers to comply with laid-down procedures when planning future events. As of Monday, the organizers have not yet announced if the lecture will be rescheduled or moved to an off-campus venue.
