The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has condemned the recent comments by United States President Donald Trump alleging that Christians are being killed in Nigeria, describing the claim as false and misleading.
Speaking at his palace in Lagos on Sunday during his 82nd birthday celebration, Akiolu said Trump’s remarks could create unnecessary tension and distort Nigeria’s image before the international community.
He stressed that Nigerians of all faiths have lived together peacefully for generations, sharing communities, celebrations, and national challenges despite occasional security incidents.
“The criminal activities and terrorism witnessed in some areas are not religiously motivated but rather acts of misguided individuals and groups,” Akiolu said.
The monarch urged global leaders to verify information before making public statements about Nigeria, warning that unverified claims can damage diplomatic relations and fuel misunderstanding.
He also called for national unity, cautioning that internal divisions based on religion or ethnicity could undermine ongoing economic and security reforms.
Akiolu renewed his advocacy for Lagos State to receive special federal recognition, noting its population size, economic importance, and central role in national development.
He commended government-led urban renewal initiatives on Lagos Island but warned against displacing indigenous residents during redevelopment projects.
The traditional ruler expressed concern over the decline in sanitation across Lagos and urged a return to house-to-house environmental inspections to restore discipline and public hygiene.
He admonished political leaders to embrace honesty, discipline, and transparency, reminding them that misuse of public funds would attract both divine and historical accountability.
Akiolu reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the Renewed Hope Agenda is beginning to yield visible progress. He expressed optimism that future generations would uphold values of integrity, fairness, and service to humanity.
