The Obaseki family of Benin, Edo State, has condemned the mob assault on their son, Dr. Pedro Obaseki, and vowed to back his pursuit of legal action.
Dr. Obaseki, former Managing Director of DAAR Communications, was reportedly attacked and humiliated at Uwa Primary School’s football field on Sunday over alleged disrespect to the Oba of Benin. Videos circulating online showed him stripped, intimidated, and taken to the palace by chiefs before further actions.
Speaking at a press briefing, Pa Daniel Igbinovia Obaseki, representing the family, described the incident as barbaric, unlawful, and a violation of fundamental human rights.
The family emphasized that Pedro had acted honorably and called for a thorough, impartial investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable. They stressed that their position was neither political nor partisan, underscoring their respect for the Oba’s palace as a unifying institution.
The Obaseki family urged calm and restraint, appealing to the public to allow lawful processes to prevail. “This moment demands wisdom, justice, and the reaffirmation of Benin’s longstanding values of civility and respect,” they said, reiterating their full support for Dr. Obaseki’s legal recourse.
