The Ogun State Police Command in southwestern Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of the driver of a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in a fatal road accident that included world-renowned professional boxer, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Okay News reports that the confirmation was made on Thursday, 1 January 2026, by the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, who disclosed that the driver is currently in custody while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The driver of the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the police spokesperson stated.
The crash occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday, 29 December 2025, around the Danco area of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest intercity highways linking Lagos, the country’s commercial capital, with Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. The vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the death of two occupants.
Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian professional boxer and former unified world heavyweight champion, was one of the occupants of the vehicle at the time of the crash. The Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the accident was identified as having the registration number KRD 850 HN.
The deceased passengers were later identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, aged 36, a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, also aged 36, a British citizen. Both victims were described as close associates of the boxer.
In the aftermath of the accident, the Lagos State Government and the Ogun State Government jointly announced on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, that Anthony Joshua had been discharged from hospital following medical evaluation and treatment.
The announcement was contained in a joint statement signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Gbenga Omotosho, Lagos State Commissioner for Information.
According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, a major private medical facility located in Ikoyi, an upscale district of Lagos, after doctors confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.
The two state governments expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate. They offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and strength for the bereaved families.
The statement further disclosed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the late victims, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also thanked members of the public for their prayers, messages of support, and expressions of concern following the accident.
The governors additionally expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for what they described as his fatherly support throughout the period. Medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, were also commended for their professionalism, dedication, and quality of care.
