The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has dismissed reports claiming it called on the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement on Saturday, the organisation clarified that it has not taken any position on the political crisis in Rivers State and distanced itself from the report, stating that it did not originate from Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

This response comes after a faction of the group issued a statement urging Speaker Amaewhule to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. The call followed a Supreme Court ruling on Friday that reinstated pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers, including Amaewhule, who had previously been removed from office.

The statement from the faction was signed by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the factional Deputy President-General, and Chief Chinenyeze Ohia, the National Publicity Secretary.

However, speaking with reporters on Sunday the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, dismissed the claim as false.

“That statement didn’t come from us. We have no involvement in it, no position on this matter, and nothing to say about it,” Chukwu stated.

He urged the public and the media to verify their sources of information, emphasizing that Ohanaeze Ndigbo was not connected to the statement in any way.
