Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, opened a community technology centre in Ihugh, Benue State, on June 16, 2026, with officials promising digital training for residents and neighbouring communities.
The facility in Vandeikya Local Government Area, in Nigeria’s north-central region, was developed through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative.
Okay News reports that Tinubu asked residents to use and maintain the centre, according to accounts from NITDA and the state-owned broadcaster Voice of Nigeria.
NITDA’s director-general, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said the facility was intended to serve students, entrepreneurs and farmers. He discussed the use of digital tools for agricultural information and business activity.
Voice of Nigeria reported that the centre had a computer laboratory and broadband access. It quoted Inuwa as identifying software development, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity among the planned training areas, with attention to women, young people and underserved students.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia said the state would support the centre with electricity, internet connectivity and trained personnel. Those were commitments made at the opening, rather than an assessment of subsequent service delivery.
The governor also said the facility would support short technical courses and provide students with internet-enabled learning resources. Officials identified neighbouring communities as potential users, extending the intended catchment beyond the town where the centre was built.
Tinubu’s visit included a separate Renewed Hope Initiative announcement supporting women traders. That programme was distinct from NITDA’s technology-centre project.
