ONDO STATE, Nigeria — Former Governor Olusegun Mimiko resigns from his political faction in Ondo State, Nigeria. Specifically, he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This significant departure heavily impacts the regional political landscape.

Accordingly, this move arrives ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections. He formally announced his exit in a detailed letter. He dated the document Friday, April 10, 2026.

Additionally, he addressed the communication to a local party chairman. The recipient manages Ward Seven in Ondo West Local Government Area. This specific district sits within southwestern Nigeria.

Furthermore, Mimiko wrote to clarify his current political status. He noted his recent absence from various party activities. Therefore, he felt compelled to make his departure official.

Okay News reports that Mimiko explained his actions clearly. “I am tendering my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective from April 10, 2026,” he stated. Moreover, he addressed growing speculation regarding his public loyalty.

He provided additional context about his recent political distance. He clarified his official membership status in writing. “As I have been somewhat distanced from party activities, I wish to put it on record that I am no longer a member of the PDP.”

Loyalists Move as Olusegun Mimiko Resigns

Consequently, the news that Olusegun Mimiko resigns did not surprise local political observers. Many close allies previously departed from the opposition group. These loyalists subsequently joined Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Currently, Aiyedatiwa serves as the Governor of Ondo State. He belongs to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Therefore, the former governor simply followed the established political trend.

Meanwhile, Mimiko stressed the peaceful nature of his departure. He insisted his exit happened “without animosity toward anyone.” Thus, he hopes to maintain positive relationships moving forward.

Finally, Eni Akinsola confirmed the official document submission. Akinsola formerly worked as the Chief Press Secretary. However, he declined to provide any further operational details.
