The Ondo state government has begun the payment of the September 2016 salaries of civil servants in the state.

Using the Paris Club Refund allocated to it, the state government paid 80 percent of the money owed each worker.

This, according to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Akeredolu, Segun Ajiboye, is in accordance with the law.

However, the trade unions have reacted negatively to this move.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have rejected the payments in percentage and have demanded the government pay the workers in full.

In a statement released by the leadership of both unions in the state, Mrs Bosede Daramola (NLC) and Soladoye Ekundayo (TUC,) the unions said the agreement with Governor Akeredolu is the utilisation of 75 percent of the second tranche of the Paris refund for the payment of the outstanding salaries of workers on Grade Levels 1 to 14.

They vowed to do “everything to reject the introduction of percentage salary in Ondo state, no matter the level of government’s propaganda to blackmail us.”

In his reaction, the chief press secretary to the governor said his principal has not violated any law concerning the payment of salaries or the Paris Club refund allocation.

He expressed his belief that “the matter would be resolved amicably.”
