The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, has announced April 23, for the conduct of elections into the 18 local council areas.

The ODIEC Chairman, Prof. Olugbenga Ige disclosed this in Akure, the state capital during a stakeholders’ meeting.

The Chief Electoral Officer, said the activities for the election which started with the issuance of notice of the elections in compliance with Section 30(1) of the Electoral Act, 2010, yesterday, will be followed by meeting with political parties for the release of the election guidelines.

According to him, conduct of party primaries by the political parties and observation of the same by the commission to enable political parties democratically nominate candidates for the elections as required by law and other activities would follow till the election day, 23rd April, 2016.

While attributing the delay in conduct of the election to the legal battle between the Chairmen and Councillors of past administration and the present government in the state, the ODIEC boss said the commission was now fully ready to exercise its constitutional rights.

He, however, appealed for the cooperation of all stakeholders and indeed the good people of the state to enable the commission deliver a free, peaceful and credible local government election.

Reacting to the development, the chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Mr. Fatai Adams urged the commission to provide a level playing ground for all the political parties in the state.
