BERLIN, Germany – One woman was killed and 16 other people were injured on Saturday night after a vehicle was driven into a crowd at the annual Christopher Street Day Pride parade in central Berlin.
The incident occurred around 22:00 local time along a path in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate, where hundreds of thousands of attendees had gathered. Okay News reports that several victims also suffered knife wounds during the attack, prompting event organizers to immediately cancel the remaining festivities and evacuate the venue.
German authorities located the abandoned vehicle crashed into a tree nearby and have identified 21-year-old Abdul B. as a primary suspect with known connections to extremist circles. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed condolences to the victims while condemning the violence and reaffirming support for the LGBTQI+ community.
Thousands of police officers from Berlin and surrounding states have expanded a citywide search for the suspect, who remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous as investigations continue.
