SAVANNAH, Ga. – Artificial intelligence research company OpenAI has announced plans to invest $750 billion in digital infrastructure through 2030, marking a 25 percent increase over its previous capital expenditure projections.
The revised investment initiative launches with “Project Camellia,” a 1,400-acre data center campus situated northwest of Savannah, Georgia, budgeted at $20 billion. Okay News reports that the facility will require up to 3.2 gigawatts of power capacity supplied by regional utility Georgia Power, with initial power delivery scheduled between 2028 and 2032.
Under local regulatory guidelines established by the Georgia Public Service Commission, OpenAI will cover all direct infrastructure and electric-service costs, alongside agreeing to curb power consumption by up to 1 gigawatt during peak grid demand. In turn, local authorities in Effingham County have granted the company a 50 percent property tax abatement spanning 15 years.
To support the massive load, Georgia Power expects to draw capacity primarily from natural gas expansion alongside solar and grid-scale battery storage. OpenAI has appointed former xAI executive Brett Mayo to oversee the rapid construction phase as the firm seeks to scale its global compute capabilities.
