OpenAI Removes Sam Altman as CEO

By Yusuf Abubakar

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, announced the removal of Sam Altman from his position as CEO.

The decision, revealed on Friday, comes after a thorough review process conducted by the board, citing concerns about Altman’s communication transparency and its impact on the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities.

In an official statement, the company stated, “Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

As a consequence of this decision, Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), will assume the role of interim CEO.

The statement did not provide specific details about the nature of Altman’s lack of candor or the issues that led to the board’s loss of confidence.

Sam Altman gained significant prominence in the artificial intelligence community when OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022.

ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot that quickly amassed more than 100 million users within a year of its launch.
