A new study by OpenAI has revealed that approximately 40 million people worldwide are turning to ChatGPT for medical information and healthcare support every week.

This trend has seen a significant increase following the release of the GPT-5 model, with users frequently asking about symptoms, medical terminology, and various treatment options. The chatbot is increasingly being viewed as a tool to bridge the gap in areas where traditional medical infrastructure may be limited.

Okay News learnt that a substantial portion of these inquiries specifically target the complexities of health insurance, with nearly 2 million messages weekly focusing on plan comparisons, billing, and coverage details. This surge is particularly notable among underserved rural communities where professional guidance is often harder to access. By simplifying dense medical jargon, the AI helps users better understand their financial and health-related options.

While OpenAI acknowledges that ChatGPT provides valuable support, the company also warns about the risks of inaccurate data or “AI hallucinations.” Health experts emphasize that while AI can be a helpful starting point for research, it should not replace professional medical diagnosis or verified advice. Users are encouraged to consult with healthcare professionals for any serious medical concerns rather than relying solely on automated responses.
