SAN FRANCISCO, United States — OpenAI has announced that it is discontinuing Sora, bringing to an end the fast-rising platform just six months after its launch and viral adoption among creators.
Okay News reports that the decision was first communicated through a message from the Sora team, which said the shutdown followed internal deliberations over OpenAI’s wider research direction.
“An important update about Sora: Today, after careful internal discussion about our broader research priorities, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue Sora.”
The team acknowledged that the platform had grown far beyond a simple product launch, becoming a creative space where users built communities and audiences around AI-generated content.
“We know many of you invested significant time and energy into Sora – building not just gens, but also audiences and real communities. The creativity that emerged exceeded what we could have expected.”
In a separate statement released on Tuesday, OpenAI confirmed that the app would be shuttered, while promising additional information on timelines and data preservation.
“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” OpenAI wrote in a post on X.
“What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
The company said its immediate focus is now on managing the transition in a way that gives users clarity and time to prepare.
“Our focus now is on making this transition as clear and thoughtful as possible. We’ll share timelines and access details so you can plan accordingly, and we’re exploring ways to support export and preservation of your work.”
The Sora team also offered a farewell message to the platform’s user base, thanking them for helping shape the product’s short but widely noticed run.
“Thank you for creating with Sora, for being part of this community, and for coming on this journey. More soon.”
Sora had quickly gained attention after launch for its AI-powered video generation capabilities, drawing strong interest from digital creators, artists, and early adopters across the world. Its closure underscores how quickly priorities can shift in the artificial intelligence industry, even for products that achieve rapid visibility and user engagement.
While OpenAI has not yet provided a final closure date, the company says further updates on the app, its API, and preservation options will follow soon.
