Lagos, Nigeria – Nigeria‘s lawmaker for Edo North, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, stated on Monday that security operatives should shoot armed criminals on sight without hesitation.
During an interview with TVC News, Okay News reports that Senator Adams Oshiomhole criticized Nigeria‘s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for clarifying that no direct mandate to execute suspects had been issued to the Nigeria Police Force. “That’s why when this IG was saying he didn’t say “shoot at sight,” Why is he apologetic? Shoot at sight. If you see a criminal, shoot on sight,” he said.
The lawmaker also commended Nigeria‘s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of State Services, for appealing a court judgment that handed life imprisonment sentences to convicted offenders instead of the death penalty. “I have said that judges should implement the law, not their personal sentiment. I’m also happy that the DSS is doing its job,” he said.
Identifying insecurity as the sole obstacle to the re-election of Nigeria‘s President, Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Edo State urged the administration to issue a firm deadline to military commanders. “I would tell him to do everything he can to direct the armed forces to ensure that the service chiefs understand that they have a duty to terminate insecurity within the next few months,” he said.
He stated that the government must establish performance metrics to evaluate the outcomes produced by military leaders in relation to the resources provided. “There has to be a benchmark to measure what we give them and the results that we get, and whether it’s commensurate. It is better he beats down their necks than anything else,” he said.
